Scriptures for Reflection and Memorization:  Matthew 5:16

“In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

People: That God’s ways may be known on earth, God’s salvation among all nations.

Leader:  May the peoples praise our God.  May all the people praise Christ the Lord.

People: May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for our God rules the peoples justly, and guides the nations of the earth.

Leader:  May the peoples praise our God.  May all the people praise Christ the Lord.

People: Then God will bless us, and all the ends of the earth will worship God.

PRAYER OF ADORATION/INVOCATION

*GATHERING SONG:  #82   “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven”

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, to His feet your tribute bring;

Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore His praises sing.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Praise the everlasting King!

Praise Him for His grace and favor to all people in distress.

Praise Him, still the same forever,  slow to chide and swift to bless.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Glorious in His faithfulness!

Fatherlike, He tends and spares us;  all our hopes and fears He knows.

In His hands He gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Widely as His mercy flows!

Angels, help us to adore Him, you behold Him face to face.

Sun and moon, bow down before Him; all who dwell in time and space.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Praise with us the God of grace!

SCRIPTURE READING:  1 Peter 2:9-12   (Pew Bible p. 1888)

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.  Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;  once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.  Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits.

Leader:  This is the word of the LORD.

People: Thanks be to God.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION:  (Unison prayer after a time of silent personal confession.)

Blessed Redeemer, the Son of the Most High God, Who is so loving toward us despite having been so despised and rejected by us;  Who is so patient and forbearing with us despite the pain our sins brought upon You;  Who shows grace upon grace toward us even when we disobey Your commands and dishonor Your name;  grant that through Your wounds we would be healed.  Forgive our selfish actions and self-centered attitudes, and so fill us with Your Spirit, that we might walk in Your ways, and speak of Your goodness and truth.  Cleanse us from our sins that the radiance of Your glory might flow through us, and that those who are lost might come to know the love and acceptance that is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord, in whose name we pray.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON  (adapted from Matthew 11:28-30)

Leader:   In love Jesus calls out to all God’s children saying, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”  Remembering the forgiveness that’s ours through faith in Christ’s atoning sacrifice, let us take hold of that forgiveness and walk in the peace and rest that’s ours in Christ.

*All:      (Gloria Patri)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.  Amen.

ENCOUNTERING GOD THROUGH GOD’S WORD

SCRIPTURE READING:  2 Timothy 2:22-26   (Pew Bible p. 1854)

Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.  Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.  And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel;  instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.  Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

Leader:  This is the word of the LORD.

People: Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM:                                       “Anthem of Gladness”                                    Joseph Martin

Choir

SCRIPTURE READING:  Titus 3:1-9   (Pew Bible p. 1859)

Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.

At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures.  We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.  But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.  He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.  This is a trustworthy saying.  And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.  These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.

Leader:  This is the word of the LORD.

People: Thanks be to God.

SERMON:  “Three Strategies for Reaching a Tough Culture for Christ”

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD THROUGH AFFIRMATION,

OFFERING, AND PRAYER

*SONG OF REFLECTION AND RESPONSE:  #563   “Song for the Nations”

May we be a shining light to the nations,

a shining light to the peoples of the earth,

Till the whole world sees the glory of Your name.

May Your pure light shine through us.

May we bring a word of hope to the nations,

A word of life to the peoples of the earth,

Till the whole world knows there’s salvation through Your name.

May Your mercy flow through us.

May we be a healing balm to the nations,

A healing balm to the peoples of the earth,

Till the whole world knows the power of Your name.

May Your healing flow through us.

May we sing a song of joy to the nations,

A song of praise to the peoples of the earth,

Till the whole world rings with the praises of Your name.

May Your song be sung through us.

May Your kingdom come to the nations,

Your will be done in the peoples of the earth,

Till the whole world knows that Jesus Christ is Lord.

May Your kingdom come on earth.

THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER AND OFFERING

Invitation

Affirmation of Faith:  The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;  through Him all things were made.  For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.  For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate;  He suffered death and was buried.  On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;  He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.  We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.  We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.  We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

Partaking of the Elements and the Giving of Our Offering

“His Glory and My Good”                          Fielding/Thompson

Acoustic Worship Team

I have seen my Father’s glory

Revealed in Jesus Christ.

And the more that I behold Him

The more He satisfies.

When I gaze upon His beauty,

When I see Him as I should,

Then my eyes are lifted upward

For His glory and my good.

There is hope in every trial

For I can trust the Lord.

He will turn my heart towards Him

And help me bear the thorn.

So, in faith, I follow Jesus

On the road not understood,

For I know that He is working

For His glory and my good.

To our God be the glory, to our God be praise

He alone, the name above all names.

I will boast ever only in the Lord, my God

For I know His glory is my good.

See the open arms of Jesus

Upon the cross that day.

What they understood as weakness

Deserves my every praise

For the charge that was against me

It was nailed into the wood.

Yes, I know that He has saved me

For His glory and my good.

To our God be the glory, to our God be praise

He alone, the name above all names.

I will boast ever only in the Lord, my God

For I know His glory is my good.

Would I gladly be made nothing

That Christ would be made more?

Would I seek the only kingdom

That far outweighs them all?

I will stand before my Father

Where the faithful saints have stood

And with joy, my heart shall praise Him

For His glory and my good.

And with joy, my heart shall praise Him

For His glory and my good.

To our God be the glory, to our God be praise

He alone, the name above all names.

I will boast ever only in the Lord, my God

For I know His glory is my good. (repeat)

Yes, I know His glory is my good

(For those joining us in the Sanctuary this morning, you are invited, as you come forward to receive the Communion Elements, and as you feel so led, to place your offering in one of the plates up front.  For those unable to be with us physically, you are encouraged to partake of the elements in your home at this time.  Also, as you are able, we invite you to set aside your offering as an act of personal dedication at this time, either to be mailed in, dropped off at the church, or brought in when you are able to join us in worship.  Let this time be one of receiving from and offering yourself to our Lord — to the praise of His glory.)
