Verse:

In the name of the Father, in the name of the Son,

In the name of the Spirit, Lord, we come.

We’re gathered together to lift up Your Name,

To call on our Savior to fall on Your grace.

In the name of the Father, in the name of the Son,

We’re gathered together to lift up Your Name,

To call on our Savior to fall on Your grace,

To call on our Savior, to fall on Your grace.

Hear the joyful sound of our offering,

As Your saints bow down, as Your people sing.

We will rise with You, lifted on Your wings

And the world will see that,

Yes the world will see that, . . .

Chorus 1:

Our God saves, our God saves,

There is hope in Your name.

Our God saves, our God saves,

There is hope in Your name.

Chorus 2:

Mourning turns to songs of praise;

Our God saves, our God saves.

Ending:

Our God saves, our God saves,

Our God saves, our God saves.

SCRIPTURE READING:  Mark 12:28-34   (Pew Bible pp. 1575-1576)

One of the teachers of the law [a Pharisee] came and heard them [Jesus and some Sadducees] debating.  Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this:  ‘Hear, O Israel:   The Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’  The second is this:  ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  There is no commandment greater than these.”

“Well said, teacher,” the man replied.  “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him.  To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”  And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.

Leader:  This is the word of the LORD.

People: Thanks be to God.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION:  (Unison prayer after a time of silent personal confession.)

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed — by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved You with our whole heart.  We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  For these things we are truly sorry and we humbly repent.  And, for the sake of Your Son, Jesus the Christ, we ask You to have mercy on us and forgive us, so that, with cleansed hearts and renewed faith, we might delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways — to the glory of Your Name.  Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (adapted from Romans 5:1, 8, Colossians 1:13-14)

Leader:  God demonstrates His own love for us in this:  While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

People: For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Leader:  Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  And so, I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

*All:      (Gloria Patri)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.  Amen.

ENCOUNTERING GOD THROUGH GOD’S WORD

SCRIPTURE READING:  Luke 10:25-37   (Pew Bible pp. 1612-1613)

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.  “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

“What is written in the Law?” he replied.  “How do you read it?”

He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’;  and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.””

“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied.  “Do this and you will live.”

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

In reply Jesus said:  “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers.  They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.  A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.  So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.  But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was;  and when he saw him, he took pity on him.  He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine.  Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him.  The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper.  ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”  Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Leader:  This is the word of the LORD.

People: Thanks be to God.

*SONG:  #393   “Blest Be the Tie That Binds”

Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love;

The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.

Before our Father’s throne we pour our ardent prayers;

Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares.

We share our mutual woes, each other’s burdens bear;

And often for each other flows the sympathizing tear.

From sorrow, toil, and pain, and sin we shall be free;

And perfect love and friendship reign through all eternity.

SCRIPTURE READING:  Romans 13:8-10   (Pew Bible p. 1765)

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.  The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command:  “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  Love does no harm to a neighbor.  Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Leader:  This is the word of the LORD.

People: Thanks be to God.

SERMON:  “The Living Sacrifice Pleasing to God Loves One’s Neighbor as Oneself”

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD THROUGH AFFIRMATION,

OFFERING, AND PRAYER

*SONG OF REFLECTION AND RESPONSE:  #397   “The Gift of Love”

Though I may speak with bravest fire,

And have the gift to all inspire,

And have not love, my words are vain,

As sounding brass, and hopeless gain.

Though I may give all I possess,

And striving so my love profess,

But not be given by love within,

The profit soon turns strangely thin.

Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control,

Our spirits long to be made whole,

Let inward love guide every deed;

By this we worship, and are freed.

THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER AND OFFERING

Invitation

Affirmation of Faith:  The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;  through Him all things were made.  For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.  For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate;  He suffered death and was buried.  On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;  He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.  We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.  We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.  We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

(For those joining us in the Sanctuary this morning, you are invited, as you come forward to receive the Communion Elements, and as you feel so led, to place your offering in one of the plates up front.  For those unable to be with us physically, you are encouraged to partake of the elements in your home at this time.  Also, as you are able, we invite you to set aside your offering as an act of personal dedication at this time, either to be mailed in, dropped off at the church, or brought in when you are able to join us in worship.  Let this time be one of receiving from and offering yourself to our Lord — to the praise of His glory.)

BRINGING OUR WORSHIP INTO OUR WORLD

*SENDING SONG:  #595   “They’ll Know We Are Christians”
